Lissencephaly, meaning 'smooth brain' in Greek, is a rare neurological disorder characterized by an underdeveloped or absent folding of the brain's surface. Typically caused by genetic mutations, Lissencephaly disrupts the normal pattern of brain development during pregnancy, resulting in a smooth appearance instead of the usual complex folds and grooves.
Individuals with Lissencephaly often experience a range of physical and cognitive challenges, which can vary in severity. Common symptoms may include developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, feeding difficulties, seizures, muscle stiffness or weakness, and impaired motor skills. Each person's journey with Lissencephaly is unique, and the impact on their daily life can vary significantly.
Due to the rarity and complexity of Lissencephaly, families facing this condition often encounter numerous obstacles, including limited access to specialized care, a lack of awareness and understanding within the community, and a shortage of resources specifically tailored to their needs.
The Aidon Jarid Foundation, inspired by our son Aidon's own journey with Lissencephaly, is dedicated to providing support, resources, and advocacy for families affected by this condition and other rare genetic disorders. Together, we strive to raise awareness, improve access to essential services, and create a community where families find comfort, guidance, and hope on their Lissencephaly journey.
